Sheffield City Hall

Sheffield City Hall opened its doors on 22 September 1932 and quickly became a popular venue for classical concerts, ballroom dancing and host to top international stars.

Now operated by Sheffield International Venues as part of their leisure portfolio created to promote the City of Sheffield as an interntational centre for sporting events, conferences, corporate hospitality, banqueting, a variety of Club Nights and host to international artistes and classical concerts.

In 2003 we successfully tendered for the design, supply and installation of the new restaurant and bars.

Due to the age and design of the building there were a number of logistical problems facing us.

KITCHEN
Objective
To provide a banqueting kitchen for up to 400 covers. The kitchen is located in the basement area with limited space and accessed by seven flights of stairs and would serve two separate basement level dining rooms and first floor conference rooms.

Main site problems and solutions
Drainage was a major issue which we solved by including a waste disposal system with de-water to remove pulp and a pumped system taking the waste to a higher level drain.

Access problems were overcome by stripping down equipment to minimum size and employing a specialist logistics company to locate it within the new kitchen by means of stairwalker machinery. The equipment was then re-assembled in situ.

Cooking Equipment
We wanted to use top quality durable equipment capable of meeting demand and decided the Lincat Opus 700 range of equipment was most suited to the purpose. Our design included bratt pans, fryers and combination ovens for maximum flexibility.

Dishwash
We installed a Dawson Commenda rack system to maximise throughput. This included an inset waste disposal unit and de-water with satellite make-up and hand-off areas.

Coldrooms
There were a number of problems to overcome as the design called for the rooms to be built around existing structural columns.

The coldroom manufacturer, Celltherm met all our requirements on quality and suitability.

BARS
There are four new bars, the stunning Archers Bar, City Bar, and First Floor Bars East and West.

Our design brief extended to supplying and installing the stainless steel back bar fittings, True GDM9 bottle coolers and Meiko glass washers.

We supplied all the light equipment and utensils including Churchill's Alchemy 'Jardin' range of fine china, the design of which ideally complemented the Arches theme.

The rejuvenated Sheffield City Hall has since hosted many major venues with great success and was the subject of much media coverage and acclaim following the re-furbishment.
